As a student of history and dévote of murder mysteries, I was thrilled to read The Cottoncrest Curse. Michael Rubin created a fast-paced page turner that allowed me to get the feel for the points in time he profiled. His descriptive passages were so evocative of actually experiencing the moist heat of a Louisiana afternoon, the dark shadows and heaviness of the New Orleans brothels, and the poor conditions under which slaves and later freed people subsisted. The characters were so real I felt as though I'd already met them - liking some, laughing sometimes, and regretting the introduction of a few. In fact, the most unlikable characters were so much so that I was very uncomfortable as I read their part in the story, and sad that these were only a few of the people who represented many in our state who openly demonstrated their animosity and even hatred of people unlike themselves. Unfortunately, the decades from post civil war all the way to the 1960's were turbulent times brought about by many who were equal opportunity haters - be you Catholic, Jewish, black, brown - anything other than a WASP. Hopefully we have grown since, and Mr. Rubin's book highlights a time not to be repeated, but one from which we can learn and grow to be wiser - a product of expanding our horizons and treating others as we wish to be treated by all. Michael Rubin's the Cottoncrest Curse, appeals to a variety of interests - murder mystery, legal thriller, historical fiction and more. The story eventually weaves its way around South Louisiana and a famous legal decision. Justice prevails with an unexpected twist that may provoke investigation into your own personal history and biases. I enjoyed the background stories in the book and the foreign language phrases even more than the central murder plot and the redneck villains.
Those from Louisiana will appreciate the well-researched attention to detail and those from other places will want to travel here to experience the language, food and music that make Louisiana a cultural treasure. Reading this book leaves me with a craving for café au lait with chicory and seafood gumbo.
Fast-paced suspenseful read with plenty of plot twists and characters for you to cheer for. I particularly liked the description of the Cajun community--especially the characters Trosclaire and Tante Odile. This book blends a lot of historical facts about the time period with action that is believable. I couldn't put it down once I started reading.
The Cotton Crest Curse is for those of us who enjoy violent thrillers but feel guilty afterwards and for those of us who enjoy serious cultural histories but lack the discipline to slog through dry, academic prose. Fascinating characters who could only inhabit the South and a plot with more uncertainty than a rural Louisiana road at night keep us guessing while we journey through a carefully researched history of Lousiana from Reconstruction to the Civil Rights Era.
To be honest, I didn't want to like this book--another novel by a lawyer. But Rubin is as fine a storyteller as he is a student of history.
Had a business trip to Boulder last week and started "The CC Curse" on the flight to Denver. Did not go to sleep that evening until I finished it- made for a long meeting the next day. A great historical thriller. As a native of Louisiana, a student of Louisiana history and a practicing attorney I found the presentation of the historical setting, the culture of the people groups of Louisiana, the time periods spanned, and the characters of the story compelling!
I'm at a total loss by the abundance of five star ratings. All the author's classmates? I read a review in an alumni publication of the college we both attended so thought I'd read it. The three star rater came closest when he said he forced himself to finish. So did I but not without beginning to skim after I concluded the pace wasn't going to pick up. I'm also surprised by those who called it well written. I found it pledian with a not particularly well concealed surprise ending.
Not riveting, but sufficiently compelling to keep the reader interested. Also an ingenius intertwine of cultures in Louisiana southern history -- Jews, African Americans, Creoles, Cajuns and white racists represented by the KKK. The character development was outstanding and in some cases outright hilarious. I especially enjoyed the Jewish and French Creole sayings that added contextual flavor. Since I happen to know that the writer is a respected attorney, I appreciated the legal history throughout the text. I found the ending rather abrupt, which forced me to a four star rating, but it would have been 4 1/2 stars if possible.
Prepare to stay up late when you pick up this beautifully written mystery where the language flows and the action continues at each turn. It has a refreshing style where the characters come alive in realistic Cajun dialect. It's obvious that the author has put a great deal of effort into the research of the era, including slavery, segregation, racism and anti-Semitism leading up to the civil rights movement of our own time. The story unfolds at a perfect pace and keeps you glued to the very end when finally the plot unwinds with a thrilling twist.
